How to Keep Your AI Use Private Around Family Devices
Step-by-Step Guide
Use a private or incognito browser window
If you share a computer with family members and want your ChatGPT conversations to stay private, use your browser's private or incognito mode. In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+N (or Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). In Safari, go to File > New Private Window. This prevents your chat history from being saved in the browser.
Manage your ChatGPT chat history settings
If you have a ChatGPT account, you can control what's saved. Go to Settings > Data Controls and turn off 'Improve the model for everyone.' You can also go to Settings > General and find options to clear your conversation history so others with access to the account can't see past chats.
Use separate accounts for different family members
If multiple people in your household use ChatGPT, the cleanest solution is for each person to create their own free account using their own email address. This way everyone's conversations are completely separate and private by default.
Be mindful on shared devices
On a shared tablet or phone, check that you've logged out of ChatGPT when you're finished. Go to the account menu and select 'Log out.' This prevents a family member from opening the app and seeing your conversations. Consider using a personal device when discussing sensitive health, financial, or personal matters.
Avoid discussing truly sensitive topics on shared networks
While ChatGPT conversations are private between you and OpenAI, they travel over your internet connection. On shared home Wi-Fi this is generally fine, but on public Wi-Fi in libraries or cafes, be cautious about the sensitivity of what you share. Stick to general questions in public places.
