How Do I Log In to ChatGPT Safely?
Step-by-Step Guide
Always type the URL directly
Open your browser and type chat.openai.com in the address bar. Don't click on links from emails, text messages, or social media posts that claim to take you to ChatGPT. Typing it yourself ensures you're going to the right place.
Look for the padlock icon
Before entering your password, check that there's a padlock icon (🔒) in your browser's address bar. This means the site is using a secure connection (HTTPS). The URL should start with 'https://chat.openai.com' — if anything looks different, don't log in.
Click 'Log in' and enter your credentials
On the ChatGPT homepage, click 'Log in.' Enter your email and password, or click 'Continue with Google' or 'Continue with Apple' if that's how you signed up. If you're using Google sign-in, make sure the Google popup is from accounts.google.com.
Enable two-factor authentication (optional but recommended)
In your OpenAI account settings, you can enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of security — even if someone gets your password, they can't log in without the code sent to your phone.
Log out on shared devices
If you're using ChatGPT on a shared computer (like at a library or community center), always log out when you're done. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select 'Log out.'
