How to Use ChatGPT Without Giving It Private Information
Step-by-Step Guide
Use Generic Details Instead of Real Personal Information
When asking ChatGPT for help, replace real details with placeholders. Instead of 'My account number is 4847392 at First National Bank,' say 'I have a bank account with a $200 unexpected charge.' ChatGPT doesn't need your real account number to help you write a dispute letter — it only needs the situation.
Never Enter These Specific Types of Information
Never type into ChatGPT: Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card numbers, passwords or PINs, Medicare or insurance ID numbers, your full legal name combined with your address or date of birth, medical record numbers, or tax ID numbers. These details are never necessary — and conversations may be reviewed to improve the AI.
Turn Off Chat History for Extra Privacy
ChatGPT allows you to disable conversation history. Go to your ChatGPT account settings → click your name in the bottom left → Settings → Data Controls → turn off 'Improve the model for everyone.' When off, your conversations are not used to train future AI models.
Use a Separate Browser Profile or Private/Incognito Mode
If you share a computer or tablet with family members, use your browser's private or incognito mode when using ChatGPT. This means your conversations won't appear in the browser history. On iPhone: open Safari → tap the tabs icon → tap 'Private.' On Chrome: tap the three dots → New Incognito Tab.
Log Out After Every Session on Shared Devices
If you use ChatGPT on a shared device (family computer, library computer), always log out when you're done. In ChatGPT, click your name in the bottom left → Log out. This prevents family members or the next user from seeing your previous conversations.
