How Do I Use ChatGPT on a Computer?
Step-by-Step Guide
Open any web browser
ChatGPT works in all modern web browsers: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, or Brave. Open whichever one you normally use. If you're not sure which browser you have, look for the colorful circle (Chrome), blue compass (Safari), or blue 'e' (Edge) on your desktop.
Go to chat.openai.com
Click in the address bar at the top of your browser, type chat.openai.com, and press Enter. This takes you directly to the official ChatGPT website.
Log in or sign up
If you have an account, click 'Log in' and enter your email and password (or use Google/Apple sign-in). If you're new, click 'Sign up' to create a free account — it takes about 2 minutes.
Start typing in the message box
You'll see a text box at the bottom of the screen that says 'Message ChatGPT.' Click on it and type your question. Press Enter to send. ChatGPT will start responding almost immediately.
Use keyboard shortcuts for efficiency
On a computer, you can use Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on Mac) to copy ChatGPT's responses, and Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V) to paste them into an email, document, or anywhere else. This makes it easy to use ChatGPT as a writing assistant.
Organize your conversations
On the left sidebar, you'll see a list of your past conversations. ChatGPT automatically names them based on the topic. You can click on any past conversation to continue it, or click 'New chat' to start fresh.
